How to invest in gold

There is an increasingly wide range of methods available to investors wanting to buy gold, or gain exposure to gold price movements. From gold coins to complex structured financial products, the most appropriate way will depend on the requirements and outlook of the individual investor.

The distinction between the purchase of physical gold and gaining an exposure to movements in the gold price is not always clear, especially since it has always been possible to invest in bullion without actually taking physical delivery.
If you are thinking about investing gold, it is worth giving the same consideration to your purchase as you would to any other investment. The following list of questions is provided as a guide to help you decide on the channel or channels that would be most appropriate for you.
  • Why have you decided to buy gold?
  • Do you want a real asset that you can have physically available at all times or do you simply want exposure to the gold price?
  • Will you want to have the gold delivered to you or would you prefer to have it stored in a vault?
  • Do you have information about all the costs that may be involved? These may include taxes, commissions, premiums, storage or insurance.
  • Is the counterparty (the person or company from or through whom you will be making the purchase) reliable and trustworthy?
  • How does gold fit in with any other investments you may have?

Why gold?

A box containing gold and valuablesGold has attracted investors throughout the centuries, protecting their wealth and providing a 'safe haven' in troubled or uncertain times. This appeal remains compelling for modern investors, although there are also a number of other reasons that underpin the widespread renewal of investor interest in gold.

Safe haven

In volatile and uncertain times, there is typically a 'flight to quality' as investors seek to protect their capital by moving it into assets considered to be safer stores of value. Gold is among a handful of financial assets that do not rely on an issuer's promise to pay, offering refuge from default risk. It provides insurance against extreme movements that often occur in the value of traditional asset classes in unsettled times.

Portfolio diversification

Most investment portfolios are invested primarily in traditional financial assets such as stocks and bonds. The reason for holding diverse investments is to protect the portfolio against fluctuations in the value of any single asset or group of assets that react in a common fashion. Portfolios containing gold are generally more robust and less volatile than those that do not.

Inflation hedge

Market cycles may come and go, but - over the long term - gold keeps its purchasing power. Its value, in terms of the real goods and services that it can buy, has remained remarkably stable. In contrast, the purchasing power of many currencies has generally declined due to the impact of rising prices for goods and services. As a result, gold is often bought to counter the effects of inflation and currency fluctuations.

Dollar hedge

Gold is often used as an effective hedge against fluctuations in the US dollar, the world's main trading currency. If the dollar appreciates, the dollar gold price falls, while a fall in the dollar relative to the other main currencies produces a rise in the gold price. While this may also be true of other assets, gold has consistently proved among the most effective in protecting against dollar weakness.

Risk management

On the whole, gold is significantly less volatile than most commodities and many equity indices. In this respect it tends to behave more like a currency. Including assets with low volatility in a portfolio will help to reduce overall risk, with a beneficial effect on expected returns. Risk factors that may affect the gold price are quite different in nature from those that affect other assets.

Demand and supply

As is true of all asset prices, gold's price moves in response to the changing balance between supply and demand. Mine production is relatively inelastic due to the long lead times that exist in gold mining, which explains why the rally in the gold price since 2001 has still not engendered an increase in production levels. Meanwhile, demand has shown sustained growth, due at least in part to rising income levels in gold's key markets. This has created the foundation for the most positive outlook the precious metal has known for a quarter of a century.

Investing in gold

Safe containing gold bars and coinsFor thousands of years, gold has been valued as a global currency, a commodity, an investment and simply an object of beauty. As financial markets developed rapidly during the 1980s and 1990s, gold receded into the background and many investors lost touch with this asset of last resort. Recent years have seen a striking increase in investor interest in gold. While a sustained price rally, underpinned by the fact that demand consistently outstrips supply, is clearly a positive factor in this resurgence, there are many reasons why people and institutions around the world are once again investing in gold. This website provides you with the background to these reasons and describes the defining characteristics of the gold market from an investor's point of view.

Market Fundamentals

Gold's extensive appeal and functionality, including its characteristics as an investment vehicle, are underpinned by the supply and demand dynamics of the gold market.

Gold investment on the rise in Pakistan

Gold investment is undergoing a boom in Pakistan, with bullion dealers reporting a 25 to 30 per cent increase in business over the last few months, according to reports.

Saeed Mazhar Ali, chairman of the All Pakistan Gem and Jewellers Merchants Association, told news service Dawn that gold bars were experiencing the highest demand from investors, with gold coins also proving popular.

He added that many people are choosing to convert their savings into gold to guard against turbulence and uncertainty in global markets.

Meanwhile, Haji Haroon Rashid Chand, president of the Karachi Saraf and Jewellers Group, said investment in gold has increased by a quarter as seasoned investors are joined by families looking to buy their first gold bars.

Samir Ahmed, chief executive of the National Commodity Exchange, noted that investment accounts for around 20 per cent of Pakistan's gold demand. Another 70 per cent is used in jewellery making, while ten per cent goes towards industrial and medical uses.

Earlier this month, Pakistan's neighbour India bought 200 tonnes of gold under the International Monetary Fund's limited gold sales programme.

Analysts including Madhusudan Kela of Reliance Mutual Fund backed the move, saying gold is a "good source of investment".

Gold soars to new peak of Rs32,572

KARACHI: The 10-gram gold price on the local bullion market touched record Rs32,572 on Wednesday in the backdrop of persistent increase in international price of the yellow metal. The one tola rate also hit a new peak of Rs38,000.
On Tuesday the gold was trading at Rs32,271 per 10-gram and Rs37,650 per tola (11.666 grams). The international gold rate on Wednesday soared to an all-time high of $1,182 per ounce from $1,171 on Tuesday and it was expected the rising price trend may continue to persist amid sharp increase in demand by investors and central banks of some countries. Besides, dollar weakness had also lured many investors towards gold.In Pakistan, the ongoing marriage season will pick up pace after Eidul Azha. Consumers who try to purchase gold jewellery on spot rather going for advance booking are the worst-hit in view of surging prices.President All Karachi Saraf and Jewellers Group Haji Haroon Rashid Chand said that jewellery sales had dipped to 20-25 per cent these days as majority of the people could not afford high prices and prefer bringing old jewellery sets for remaking. ‘The demand of artificial jewellery is also rising across the country,’ he added. After a gap of at least 12 months, he claimed that gold price in the country was Rs200 per tola higher than Dubai. People have already become aware for investing in the yellow metal after losing hope in stocks, property, dollar and other investment avenues. People are buying gold bars as per their capacity, he said.

Pakistan’s Gold Trade

From time immemorial, gold has been respected as the best used precious metal not only due to its usage in ornaments but also as a widespread means of investment 'a saving for a rainy day'. No wedding ceremony in Pakistan is complete without gold jewellery which traditionally has become the most expensive item on the dowry list for parents of brides and also for the prospective grooms.
In Pakistan, like many other countries in the region, gold jewellery is more than a thing of beauty, a joy for everyone, particularly the women folks. It is the most credible mean of investment, which offers better returns than fixed deposits. The popular opinion is not unjustified as there has been a tremendous increase in the price of gold over the years.
Pakistan produces one the finest gold jewellery, particularly plain and generally studded, and its hand made designs are second to none in the world. It is also gifted with vast deposits of world class precious and semi-precious stones including rubies from Hunza Valley, pink emerald of Swat, and peridotes from Kohistan.

How to Buy Gold Coins and Bullion

Building Your Gold Portfolio
Portfolio diversification is the hallmark of the prudent investor. For millions worldwide, sensible diversification in the overall portfolio includes gold ownership. To help you meet that essential need, we offer four primary groupings of gold items:

1. Contemporary gold bullion coins and bars

2. Low-premium, historic European and S.American gold coins

3. Low-premium, historic U.S. gold coins

4. Graded historic U.S. $20 gold pieces

How you structure your portfolio depends upon your personal financial needs and goals, and should be done in concert with one of our experienced and knowledgeable brokers. You no doubt have an interest in gold as a means to weathering the uncertainties ahead and maximizing your return.

How to Buy Gold in Five Easy Steps

Though the task for the newcomer may seem daunting and a bit confusing, a portfolio diversification into gold is really a very simple process that some tend to over-complicate. Having a good sense of what you want gold to accomplish for you is the first hurdle.

From there it breaks down to Five Easy Steps:

1. Familiarize yourself with our selection of gold coins and bullion.

2. Call our Trading Desk for current gold prices and portfolio consultation.

3.
Lock in your order at current prices over the phone.

4. Remit payment.

5.
Sit back and relax while we fulfill your order.

It's that easy!

In over 35 years, assisting thousands of clients located from Los Angeles to London, on orders ranging from hundreds of dollars to hundreds of thousands of dollars, we have never failed to honor an agreed-upon price or to deliver metal as ordered.

Essentially, there are three broad categories of gold investors:

1. Those who wish to hedge uncertainty and possible financial disaster

2. Those who wish to simply make a profit.

3. Those who wish to combine hedging with potential profit

Your objectives will determine what you include in your portfolio. Some thought and attention must be given to which of the three categories you belong, and making that determination will speed along the configuration process once you contact one of our brokers.

Once you have a handle on why you are buying gold, deciding what to buy becomes a relatively easy process that can be sorted out between you and your broker at USAGOLD-Centennial Precious Metals. In The ABCs of Gold Investing: Protecting and Building Your Wealth with Gold, author Michael J. Kosares advises that you plan your portfolio in consultation with a gold market profressional. "Stock brokers, financial planners, mutual fund sales personnel, and the like," he says, "have little knowledge of this highly specialized field. As a result, they sometimes confuse more than help. . . Whether to preserve assets or to make a profit, plan carefully under the guidance of a gold professional."

Our experienced account representatives are well-versed in the four product categories mentioned above and the role each plays in the overall gold portfolio. In addition, each has many years experience matching the three client profiles immediately above with the proper portfolio mix.

USAGOLD-Centennial Precious has helped thousands of investors become successful gold owners. We can help you.

The Physical Gold IRA

Why gold makes sense in your retirement plan

As the ultimate long-term store of value, gold coins and bullion may very well be the ultimate retirement asset. Among the primary asset classes most often used in retirement planning -- stocks, bonds, annuities and savings accounts -- the tangible king of metals stands out as the only one that does not rely on the performance of another individual or institution for value. Former French president Charles DeGaulle once famously said of gold, it 'has no nationality and is eternally and universally accepted as the unalterable fiduciary value par excellence'. What better way to save for retirement than with the ultimate savings vehicle -- physical gold. We invite you to establish your gold retirement plan through USAGOLD.

Rollovers

gold IRARolling over a Traditional or Roth IRA into a gold-backed IRA is relatively simple. The term "rollover" actually refers to the rolling over of assets in a 401(k) plan when the employee has separated from his/her employment. Separation from employment is the key to the ability to rollover the 401(k) assets into a gold-backed IRA. If no separation has occurred, then chances are very high that the plan holder will be barred from moving the assets out of the employer's 401(k) plan. However, there are exceptions to every rule, and a telephone consultation is always in order to see if the exception applies to you.

When it comes to existing IRAs, then the term "transfer" applies. Existing IRAs with banks, credit unions, stock brokerage firms or other financial service providers can be transferred directly to one of our referred trust companies. One very convenient option is to transfer either the cash in the account or the securities themselves. However, this arrangement is not always acceptable to the firm who is transferring your account. Again, for every rule there are exceptions -- which is why telelphone consultation is highly encouraged.

Approved precious metals investments

GOLD BARS & COINS: At present, gold bars with a purity of 24 karat (0.995+ fineness) are allowed into an IRA. They must be hallmarked by a NYMEX- or COMEX-approved refiner/assayer. These bars come in the following sizes: 1 ounce, 10 ounces, kilo (32.15 ounces), 100 ounces, and 400 ounces. Gold coins having a purity of 24 karat (0.9999 fineness) are the only ones allowed in an IRA, with the exception of the 22 karat US Gold Eagle. Readily acceptable for gold IRAs are the popular bullion coins from America, Australia, Austria and Canada. The South African Krugerrand, being a 22 karat bullion coin, is not allowed.

SILVER: Regarding silver investments, only silver coins and bars with 0.999+ fineness are allowed. These include the 1 oz. US Silver Eagle, Canadian Silver Maple Leaf, and the Mexican Silver Libertad bullion coins. Investors can purchase 100 oz. silver bars and also 1000 oz. silver bars. Pre-1965 bags of US silver coins (dimes, quarters, half dollars, and silver dollars) are not allowed in an IRA because their alloy contains only 90% silver and thus does not meet the fineness standard.

PLATINUM GROUP METALS: Platinum and palladium bars and coins of 0.9995+ fineness can also be placed into a precious metals IRA. Both the US and Canadian Mints make 1 oz. platinum coins. Other countries, such as Great Britain and Australia, have 1 oz. platinum coins which are not as well known but also qualify. All platinum and palladium bars and coins must be from a NYMEX- or COMEX-approved refiner/assayer. Private companies with well-established hallmarks, such as Johnson Matthey and Englehard, manufacture platinum and palladium bars ranging in size from 1 oz. to 100 oz.

What You Need To Know Before You Buy Your First Ounce of Gold

The rich old speculator Bernard M. Baruch forehandedly bought gold and gold shares after the 1929 Crash. Years later a suspicious Treasury Secretary asked him why. Because, Baruch replied, he was 'commencing to have doubts about the currency.' Many are beginning to doubt the the strength of the dollar as they well might. Following Baruch's example, they should lay in some gold as a hedge." -- James Grant, Grant's Interest Rate Observer
Question. What kind of gold should I buy?

Answer. We probably get that question more than any other -- pretty much on a daily basis. The answer, however, is not as straightforward as you might think. What you buy depends upon your goals. We usually answer the "What should I buy?" question with a question of our own: "Why are you interested in buying gold?"

If your goal is simply to capitalize on price movement, then bullion coins will serve your purposes. If you are interested in long-term asset preservation and you have additional concerns about capital and/or monetary controls -- a more complicated scenario -- then you might want to include the lower premium variety of pre-1933 European and American gold coins in the mix. These have been treated by the U.S. government since the 1930s as historical items, and, as a result, afford the privacy-minded investor a greater degree of safety than gold bullion.

But what I just gave you is a rough sketch. To develop a more refined strategy, we recommend spending time with your broker here at USAGOLD-Centennial Precious Metals. We can help you design a portfolio capable of weathering these uncertains times and in keeping with your long-term goals.
Q. When should I buy?

A. The short answer is 'When you need it.' You cannot approach gold the way you approach stock or real estate investments. Timing is not the real issue. The first question you need to ask yourself is whether or not you believe you need to own gold. Once you answer that question in the affirmative, there is no point in delaying your actual purchase. The real goal is to diversify so that your overall wealth is not compromised by economic dangers and uncertainties.

Q. Why not wait for the necessity to arise, then buy gold?

A. During the course of last year, when concern about the financial crisis was peaking, there were periods of gold coin bottlenecks and actual shortages. The national mints could not keep up with public demand, and the flow of older gold from Europe was stymied by accelerating demand both there and in the United States. Premiums shot-up and a wild scramble developed for the available gold, even at rapidly escalating prices.

These events pointed up some of the problems inherent to the contemporary gold market. During times when demand for is booming, you cannot call the warehouse and order gold coins like you can most other consumer items. Even running at full capacity, the manufacturers (the national mints) cannot keep up with demand surges like the one we had in mid-2008 and again in early 2009. In the case of the older coins coming from Europe, the supply simply dries up because, to make a long story short, they aren't making them anymore. As a result you cannot treat a gold acquisition the way you do ordinary consumer purchases. Though your need may be great, the supply might simply have disappeared.

Q. You frequently mention gold as insurance. What do you mean by that?

A. Those of you who have read my book, The ABCs of Gold Investing: How to Protect and Build Your Wealth with Gold, know that gold's baseline, essential quality is its role as the only primary asset that is not someone else's liability or responsibility. That separates gold from the majority of capital assets which in fact do rely on another's ability to pay, like bonds and bank savings, or the performance of the management, or some other delimiting factor, as is the case with stocks.

The first chapter of that book ends with this:

"No matter what happens in this country, with the dollar, with the stock and bond markets, the gold owner will find a friend in the yellow metal -- something to rely upon when the chips are down. In gold, investors will find a vehicle to protect their wealth. Gold is bedrock."

This is precisely what people learned during recurring economic crisis situations over the centuries as well as in contemporary meltdowns such as Mexico's in 1994, the Pacific Rim's in 1997, and the United States' slow motion crisis from 2001 to present. If you consider what investors lost in the U.S. stock market over the last eight years and what gold investors gained during the same period, the swing in the net wealth effect is astonishing. When push came to shove, those who owned gold understood what we mean when we say "gold is bedrock." To reduce this to a course of action: Diversification is important.

Q. What percentage of my assets should I invest in gold?

A. Once again the answer is not cut and dried, but a general rule of thumb is 10% to 30%, and once again your broker at USAGOLD-Centennial Precious Metals can help you make the decision. How high you go between 10% and 30% depends upon how concerned you are about the current economic, financial and political situation.

Q. Can you give us a profile of the typical gold investor?

A. Traditionally, wealthy, aristocratic European and Asian families have kept a strong percentage of their assets in gold as a protective factor. That same philosophy has taken hold in the United States in recent years, particularly in light of the on-going financial crisis. Our clientele represent a cross-section of America and Europe, but the heavy buying is concentrated in the professions and among people who own businesses.

Beyond those baseline markets, one of the fastest growing gold demographic groups is inherited family wealth. Contemporary heirs often have a stronger impulse to diversity with gold than their parents or grandparents did. They have lived through a period since the early 1970s of persistent decline in purchasing power and recurrent financial bubbles. Along the way, they have learned a few lessons about contemporary portfolio management. We have helped many family groups and trust funds diversify substantial investment holdings into gold coins and bullion.

Q. In your book, The ABCs of Gold Investing, you start the chapter by saying "Who you do business with is one of the most important aspects of gold investing." Why is that?

A. A solid, professional gold firm can go a long way in helping the investor shortcut the learning curve. A good gold firm can help you avoid some the problems and pitfalls encountered along the way, and provide some direction. It is very important to pick the right firm. An experienced and reputable gold broker can help you choose the right gold product mix to hedge your portfolio, make sure the prices you pay are in line with market expectations, and help you in general with the decision making process. Also, the right firm -- one with proven longevity -- will most likely be around to help you liquidate all or part of your holdings should the need arise.

Q. Can you briefly describe what you believe to be the biggest mistake investors make when starting out as gold owners?

A. The biggest trap investors fall into is buying a gold investment that bears little or no relationship to his or her objectives. Take safe-haven investors for example. That group makes up 90% of our clientele, and probably a good 75% of the current physical gold market. Most often the safe-haven investor simply wants to add gold coins to his or her portfolio mix, but too often this same investor ends up instead with a leveraged (financed) gold position or a handful of exotic rare coins (often costing five or six figures). These have little to do with safe-haven investing, and most investors would be well served to avoid them -- except as a sideline.

Q. What is your view of gold stocks?

A. Many of our clients own gold stocks and we believe they have a place in the portfolio. However, it should be emphasized that gold stocks are not a substitute for real gold ownership, that is, in its physical form as coins and bars. Instead, stocks should be viewed as an addition to the portfolio after one has truly diversified with gold itself. Gold stocks can actually act opposite the intent of the investor, as some justifiably disgruntled mine company shareholders learned in the recent past when their stocks failed to perform as the price rose. There is no such ambiguity involved in actual gold ownership.

We cover some the differences between gold stock ownership and metal ownership in "The Differences between Owning Stocks and Owning Metal" so I won't go into the details here. Suffice it to say that gold stocks are stocks first and metal second.

Q. What about gold futures contracts?

A. Futures contracts are generally considered one of the most speculative arenas in the investment marketplace. The investor's exposure to the market is leveraged and the moves both up and down are greatly exaggerated. Something like 9 out of 10 investors who enter the futures market come away losers. For someone looking to hedge his or her portfolio against economic and financial risk, this is a poor substitute for owning the metal itself.

Q. Please summarize: What is the best approach for the safe-haven investor?

A. If you want to protect yourself against inflation, deflation, stock market weakness and potential currency problems -- in other words, if you want to hedge financial uncertainties, there is only one portfolio item that will serve you in all seasons and under most circumstances -- gold coins and bullion.
